The Ruckus Society is a multi-racial network of trainers dedicated to providing the necessary tools, preparation, and support to build direct action capacity for ecological justice and social change movements. We work with Indigenous communities and other communities of color working to preserve their homes and environments and for climate justice.
Freedom Trainers - Before Donald Trump’s election, an informal group of trainers—many with experience working under authoritarian regimes—began asking a sobering question: what would people need if he won? One answer rose above the rest, echoed by pro-democracy movements worldwide: training. Out of those early conversations, Freedom Trainers was formed.
Today, Freedom Trainers is a decentralized network of experienced educators and organizers, including leaders from the Horizons Project, Choose Democracy, Beautiful Trouble, and Free DC. Together, we work to counter democratic backsliding by equipping people with the skills and strategies of strategic noncooperation.
Our trainings are grounded in three core pillars:
• Understanding the authoritarian playbook;
• Using pillars-of-support analysis to identify regime vulnerabilities and map how power flows; and
• Developing the skills and practices of noncooperation that can fracture an authoritarian’s base of support. -
